The winter polo season is in full swing around the state. United States Polo Association clubs are enjoying success, attracting fans and promoting polo at every level.

International Polo Club Palm Beach successfully opened its 20-goal polo with the Herbie Pennell Cup, Joe Barry Memorial and Ylvisaker Cup.

IPC also introduced Gladiator Polo, presented by U.S. Polo Assn. The inaugural event created by Mark Bellissimo offered $100,000 in prize money and featured pro players in an arena polo setting at the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center's Equestrian Village. The second game is Feb. 16 and will be rebroadcast by NBC Sports Network on Feb. 23...

Grand Champions is bringing back the Sterling Cup (16-20) Feb. 22-March 11 and $100,000 World Cup in April. In addition to its monthly 6, 8 and 12-goal leagues, Grand Champions also unveiled a new Women's League that plays Wednesdays at Santa Rita Polo Farm and awards monthly team champions... 

After a successful opening month, there is plenty of polo left to play over the next three months.
The next generation of polo players will be showcased at the Feb. 16 Polo Training Foundation International Cup at Grand Champions at 4 p.m. Argentina, England Jr. Colts, PTF USA and Girls International will compete. The game will be live streamed by ChukkerTV...

One of the highlights of the winter polo season each year is the induction of new members into the Hall of Fame at the Museum of Polo. The Feb. 17 event in Lake Worth will induct Mariano Aguerre, John "Jackie" Murphy, Leverett S. Miller, George Miller, Chicken and Nebraska Sunset...The following day IPC will host the Nespresso 40-Goal game between Airstream (Facundo Pieres, Sapo Caset, Gonzalo Pieres, Sebastian Merlos) and Pilot Catastrophe Services, Inc. (Adolfo Cambiaso, Polito Pieres, Hilario Ulloa, Miguel Novillo Astrada) benefitting the Polo Players Support Group, Inc...

The USPA High Goal Committee for 2017 was announced recently: Maureen Brennan, Chair; Marc Ganzi and Jeff Hildebrand, High Goal Team Owners; Roberto Zedda and Chris Strateman, High Goal Pro Player/Manager/Coach; Jimmy Newman, Club Manager; Charlie Muldoon, USPA Umpires, LLC rep; Duncan Huyler, USPA Marketing, LLC rep; and Tom Gose, USPA Rules Committee rep...
Team USPA tryouts are Feb. 19-22 for players between the ages of 18 and 23 in Wellington....The National Youth Tournament Series is back for 2017. The qualifier season begins March 1 and continues through Aug. 7. The final will be held at Santa Barbara Polo & Racquet Club. USPA Polo Development will work with you to create a custom two-day schedule tailored to meet the needs of your interscholastic, intercollegiate and outdoor youth players. The USPA hosted a successful YPO clinic for seven players from across the country last month in Wellington at Firehouse Field and Jan Pamela. The club is gearing up for its 6, 8 and 12 goal tournaments beginning with the 12-goal tournament onMarch 17-19. To kick off the season the club is hosting Polo 101, an introduction to polo, March 14-15. During the season polo is held every Friday and Sunday from March 17th to May 28th. The club averages more than 30,000 spectators a year including 2,000 fans every weekend. For more information call 352-753-3229.



The club has added another 26-goal tournament. TheMarch 26-April USPA Butler Cup, will join the C.V. Whitney Cup, USPA Gold Cup and U.S. Open...Spartacus (Tommy Biddle, Felipe Viana, Jason Crowder) won the first installment of Gladiator Polo with a 12-10 win over Crixus (Mike Azzaro, Matias Magrini, Santi Torres). The winning team won $24,000 and losing team $6,000. U.S. Polo Assn. is the presenting sponsor...La Indiana (Michael Bickford, Gringo Colombres, Jeff Hall, MVP Mike Azzaro) won the Joe Barry Memorial Cup with a 13-10 win over Mt. Brilliant...Villa Del Lago/Modere (Carlucho Arellano, Agustin Obregon, MVP Hilario Ulloa, Jim Zenni) won the Herbie Pennell Cup with a 12-9 win over Postage Stamp Farm, making its IPC season debut. After a successful opening season month of hosting the 6, 8 and 12-goal tournament leagues and Women's League, the club will be even busier this month. In addition to its league play (Halo Polo Trophy 6-Goal, Top Pony 8-Goal Series and USPA Sieber 12-Goal Memorial), the club will host the Feb. 16 PTF International Cup, featuring top youth players from around the world...Grand Champions is  bringing back the Feb. 22-March 11 Sterling Cup (16-20 goal), a mainstay at the old Palm Beach Polo and Country Club....January team champions that featured players ages 12 to 65, were: Limited Edition 12-Goal Series (Patagones, GSA (Handicap); Aspen Valley 8-Goal Cup (Seacap, Patagones (Handicap); and Metropolitan 6-Goal Cup (Willow Farm, Hawk Hill (Handicap). The club hosted two tournament finals recently. TuffRider/Boca Polo (Peter Nathaniel, Timmy Sharma, Omar Sosa, Hector Galindo) defeated Halcyon, 6-3, in the 6-10 goal league tournament final. Kings Hill (Jeff Sopik, Geoff Richards, Chip McKenney, Jeff Blake) edged Green Hill Winery, 5-4.5, in the 3-6 goal league tournament final...The full training facility is offering instruction for all player levels. The club is currently hosting the 12-goal Live Oak Challenge Tournament featuring six teams including The Villages. The final is Feb. 26...Mount Airy/Banbury Cross won the Fakahatchee 6-Goal Invitational...Starfish won the Cypress Challenge 8-Goal tournament with a 10-9 win over Highground. Kristos Magrini was MVP and new father Stevie Orthwein won BPP with Shoshanna...Patagones (Joaquin Avendano, MVP Benjamin Avendano, Santi Avendano, Santi Wulff) won the Holiday Family 8-Goal Cup...The club is hosting a WCT Season 12 qualifier with the Feb. 23-25 Tabebuia Cup (12-14 goals)...Stevie and Margaret Orthwein announced the arrival of Hazel Orthwein, 7 pounds, 6 ounces. The 10-goal La Martina Cup, featuring four teams (Beverly Polo, Forbes Plunkett, Santa Clara, Crossfit El Cid), is currently under way. The tournaments continues on Sunday with a 1 p.m. game between Crossfit El Cid and Santa Clara....Host Santa Clara (Francisco Escobar, Lucas Escobar, Landen Daniels, Mariano Obregon) won the Victoria Performance Cup with wins over Santa Clarita and Ymas...Skaneateles won a 12-goal exhibition game against Santa Clarita...Sixteen-year-old Nico Escobar, who grew up playing at his family's club, is turning heads competing with Orchard Hill at IPC. InSunday's 9-8 win over Valiente II, the King's Academy student rallied his team with back-to-back goals and scored what turned out to be the game-winner riding the length of the field to score in the final chukker. The club is featuring matches on the last Friday of the month in addition to its full winter schedule through April 9th. Highlighting February is the Feb. 24 Cowboys and Polo Players Competition. The public polo matches are held Sundays. The club hosted a Show Me Your Love tailgate contest, sponsored by Saks Fifth Avenue, in honor of Valentine's Day. Awards for Best Love Potion, Overall Red/Love Décor and Best Cupid Outfit were given. At halftime a longest shot contest from a wooden horse was held with the winner getting a free polo lesson. The club, in the midst of a 16-week winter polo season, hosted its first women's tournament with the Feb. 5 Florida Circuit Women's Challenge Invitational. CrossFit El CID/Banbury Cross (Clarissa Echezeretta, Brianna Gunnel, Hope Arellano, Cecelia Cochran) defeated Dream Ride (Loryn Lamport, Hilary Blythe, Jennifer Williams, Tiffany Busch). Thirteen-year-old Hope Arellano was named MVP. Vera played by Echezeretta was BPP...The Florida Circuit Players 4-Goal Cup and Florida Circuit Congressional 0-6 Goal Cup are currently being held with the finals on Feb. 16 and 19...The club is hosting matches every Sunday with the exception of April 23 to attend the U.S. Open.
